Welcome

My name is Emilie, and I am a mathematics communicator and teacher based in Copenhagen.

I have created this little corner of the internet to share joyful and beautiful math.

Below are my most recent posts. You can find a list of all my posts under the archive.

  • In my previous post, I explained a geometric construction to find the real roots of a polynomial. This post is a follow-up. I want to give you a second perspective to why the construction works. In this post, we will build up our understanding of the construction one degree at a time from degree one polynomials to degree $n$. I find that this second perspective provides a neat geometric understanding of polynomial factorization. Read more...

  • One of my favorite books is the Oulipo inspired book 99 variations on a proof by Philip Ording. The main character of the book is the cubic polynomial p(x) = x3 - 6x2 + 9x - 4. In each of the 99 chapters of the book, Ording shows that the roots of p are λ = 1 and λ = 4. I was particularly caught by the geometric construction in proof 60 - a construction devised by the Austrian engineer Eduard Lill in 1867. Read more...
